Life took an unexpected turn for Jason Smith when he was diagnosed with cancer. After undergoing surgery and focusing on his recovery, he knew it was time to return to work.
We’ll let Jason share his story:
“I had been working as a receiver—a job I got through Verstela—but when I needed to step away for cancer treatment, things didn’t go as planned and unfortunately, I ended up losing my job.
As soon as I was ready to work again, I reached out to Verstela’s Vancouver, Washington office. I didn’t even look anywhere else; they always find me something awesome. Stacy, a recruiter there, called me about an Order Selector job at an auto manufacturer and I thought it could be a great fit.
She set me up with an interview and it went really well! The team asked basic questions—like if I could operate equipment—and I just tried to be myself. I think my background and work ethic stood out to them. Pretty quickly after that, I got the offer, and I said yes!
My first day was eye-opening. The work is hard, but it’s such a well-oiled machine. Everything is super clean and organized, not all over the place like some places I’ve worked. It makes the job so much easier.
And my coworkers are awesome. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and we have these little discussions during the day that make the work enjoyable. It’s such a great environment.
I also love that I’m learning so much about cars. I’ve always been into cars. I’m not a mechanic, but I’ve been fascinated by them since I was a kid. It’s cool to see and handle all these parts up close, like transmissions and other components.
For anyone out there looking for a job: stick with it. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t find something right away. Even if you have to wait a few weeks, keep searching. The right job is out there.”
